A Spoonie’s Guide to Assignments and Effective Studying

Hello my study bugs,

As it is the snowball-of-assignments time of year down under, I thought it would be appropriate to embark my years of accumulated study wisdom upon you.

I was diagnosed (which ended up being a misdiagnosis…) with Lyme Disease just after I had tasted about two seconds of freedom from finishing high school. I still managed to get a high enough ATAR for my second university choice (thank you, language boost!), but found it incredibly difficult to adjust to the high demands of a health science course. Finding a balance between effective study and recuperation time seems near impossible, but I have a few tips that may help you to achieve your academic goals without sacrificing all of your energy.

Let's get started!

1. Set broad, forgiving goals
The worst mistake you can make is to set rigid study goals for yourself. Instead of forcing yourself to get through  extensive amounts of material in a short period of time, try to space out your work over the day. This will help to reduce feelings of being overwhelmed, and will make sure you get as much work done as you’re capable of!

2. Don’t procrastinate!
Most people you will encounter at tertiary institutions will leave all of their work to the last minute. DON’T DO IT, IT’S A TRAP. If you’re anything like me, your body is not ready to pull an all-nighter. It’s best to do very small contributions to study/assignments over a longer period of time as this ensures that your work is actually of some quality, as well as gives you time to correct mistakes you may have made. Besides, the earlier you study, the more prepared you’re going to be!

3. Take breaks
Be nice to yourself. Don’t sit for hours at a time going over materials again and again. It has actually been proven that shorter study intervals result in better encoding of information. In psychology, this is called the “spacing effect” (wow, look at me with all this knowledge). Many of my tutors have also suggested taking a nap after a period of study, as this helps the information to not be disrupted by external forces e.g., Tumblr, YouTube, etc. Yes, I’m giving you permission to nap. Don’t question it, just let it be.

4. Highlight (within reason)
Although it has been proven that highlighting is not an effective study tool, I find it extremely useful at keeping my attention when I have brain fog. Just try not to highlight entire pages at a time, just focus on those key words, friend!

5. Get an extension if you need it
Sometimes, our bodies aren’t our best friends. If you’re too sick to complete an assignment or tests by the deadline, I would recommend contacting whatever support services are in place at your institution. At my university, we have a disability support office that helps students with conditions such as my own to have more leeway when it comes to assignment deadlines. This tool is extremely helpful when you have a flare that won’t quit!

6. Find out which memory strategies work best for you
Nobody studies in the same way.  However, I have learned some techniques in my psychology degree that have been proven to help store information into long-term memory. Some simple ones are:

The generation effect : generating information from the study material helps you to have a better memory for that material, as you’re creating meaning from what you’re reading.

The self-reference effect: relate study material to yourself.  This has been labeled one of the best mnemonic techiques you can use. So go ahead, be self-involved!

The testing effect: testing yourself repeatedly results in better learning. This is because the long term memory becomes focused on the information that you’re required to remember. Besides, creating colourful test sheets is the fun part (…well, at least for me.)

7. Get visual!
Creating diagrams is a great way to learn information. There are apps such as Simplemind that let you create endless mind-maps in all kinds of pretty colours. Most lecture slides come with diagrams (depending on the course), so you can always jazz those up with highlighters as a last resort!

8. Don't forget to take time out for yourself!
Don't let your life revolve around study/assignments!! You deserve to kick your feet up every once in a while. So go ahead, watch an episode of your favourite tv show (JUST one, cheeky), or even get out of the house for a while if your energy levels permit it. Straining yourself with learning materials won't help your stress levels, so please let yourself have some relaxation time. You've earned it!

Lastly, I found this amazing master post on study techniques on Tumblr. Hopefully this covers everything I’ve missed!

I hope that this has been helpful!

♡ Pixie Styling Tutorial ♡

Hello hello,

So, I finally made a YouTube video!

P.S My concealer isn't that yellow in real life, I swear it...

For the curious, I use Loreal Paris Extraordinary Oil prior to hair washing. Then, I use Tresemme Naturals Nourish and Replenish shampoo and conditioner to wash the excess out. Hopefully that explains why my hair looks unrealistically shiny in the video!

Welp, that's all for now.

My Pixie Cut: History + Pros and Cons

Hello friends,

So, I finally got the proper chop…

…and it is probably one of the best hair decisions I have made ever.

You wanna know why? I’ll TELL you why.

(No, but really. Get comfortable, make a snack, and/or get a drink. This could be a long one.)

Only 4 months ago did I have 25+ inch long extensions hanging from my scalp. Now, it was fun to look like a mermaid and all, but MY GOD, the effort it took. The HEADACHES. It ended up not being such fun times, with my very expensive hair looking like a horse’s mane after only a month (not that horses aren’t majestic creatures, of course). It was time to say farewell to the long hair I had always dreamed of, but had learned to dread.
So I got the ever so trendy “lob” cut:
Dem filters..

Now that I look at it, I wouldn’t class it as short as I believed it was. But hey, my introduction to the short haired life was very gradual. I rocked this very long bob for just over a month, until the short hair bug bit me again. This time, though, I decided to actually cut shape into my hair (what? WHAT? Crazy). And so, the angled bob was born:

Stylish? Yes. Easily styled? Hell no.
So goodbye layers, hello blunt chin-length bob:

As you have already seen from my first blog post (#shamelessplug), this was relatively easy to style. But through all of these drastic (well at least for me, considering my hair history) changes to my hair, I decided that having one layer blunt hair wasn’t as good as I had decided it was. Short or not, it was always flying into my face, which was an absolute deal breaker for me. I had massive hair envy of my partner, whose hair is quiffed and it does not move all day. Like, at all. He must have sold his soul for that crap.

After a month of rigid research, YouTube tutorials, and endless Pintrest page scrolling, I decided I would take the plunge and get a pixie cut:

Wow, look at me no-ow~
Now that we have dappled in my amazing hair history, I will list some pros and cons of my new love.

PROS
1. You immediately go to the next step of adorable. No excuses, you’re cute now.

2. Depending on your hair type, it will basically style itself. I have yet to experience this “pixie bedhead” phenomenon, but my fine, naturally straight/slightly wavy hair is now being my best buddy with this style. Although, I still use products in my hair to keep it looking the most fab (tutorial coming soon~).

3.Your hair will never get all up in your business again. This means you can rock the stickiest of lip-glosses and the creamiest of lipsticks out there. Go nuts, kids!
4. Hair accessories look 1000x cuter now. That’s some legit math.

5. You will get WAY more compliments than you’re expecting. I got five on the day I got it cut alone, that’s five more than I have ever received on a normal day!

6. A pixie will really enhance your best features, and even highlight features you had never noticed before! I, for one, did not know of my splendid neck shape until it was on show.

7. **An additional pro for the spoonie ladies**: this is a VERY spoonie-friendly hairstyle. I used to aggravate my migraines by pulling at my longer hair while styling it, as well as really struggle to braid it on a very low spoons day due to chronic pain. Now I barely have to move my hair around, which saves my energy for bigger and better things.

CONS

1.Regular trips to the hairdresser will become your life. To keep your hair at its optimum pixieness, it’s recommended to go back to the salon every 4-6 weeks. However, some people do this even when they don’t have short hair, so it may not be a con for you!

2.There is a teeny tiny chance that you won’t like it. BUT, before you freak the frick out on me, there are many ways to cover up the growing out phase. Accessories, beanies, even extensions, to name a few.

3. Less styling options could be a possible con. Personally, I wore my long hair the exact same way everyday, so it’s not a big concern of mine. If you’re a person who really enjoys doing fancy updos, you may want to have a little think about your decision.

So, yeah, that’s about it.

I will be making a video on my pixie cut, as well as the styling video mentioned above, very soon!
